Do you have what it takes to be a May Hounds Foster Carer?

You will be helping retired Greyhounds prepare for their forever homes.
It’s also a great opportunity if you are looking to welcome one into your family.

As a foster carer you will be assuming a vital role in the life of this Greyhound. From you they will learn skills and behaviours to prepare them for an adoption into their new forever home and a lifetime of love and commitment. Your responsibility is to provide a safe and happy environment for the Greyhound, to facilitate their socialization and introduce them to the joys of living in a family home.

  • Give the Greyhound stable leadership to learn about a new life outside of a kennel environment.

  • Introduce them to new sights, sounds and smells - in and out of your home.

  • Introduce them to different people and animals if possible - on and off your property.

  • Assist with temperament testing, basic training and any behavioural modification that may be necessary.

  • Taking them to any vet appointments for medical treatment if required.

  • Taking them to May Hounds events and 'meet and greets' with prospective adopters.

  • Providing us with weekly updates and photos on how they are progressing. Provide a summary of their personality, likes and photos for their adoption profile.

  • Most importantly, give them all the love and attention.

  • Contact us with any concerns or problems as soon as possible to enable us to provide suitable advice.

In return May Hounds will;
provide you with a monthly food allowance, a one-off bedding allowance, promotional jacket, a suitable sized crate and contact support 24/7. We supply your Greyhound with a lead, collar, muzzle and coat (if required).

Without the time and support of the amazing volunteers, we would not be able to rehome our Greyhounds.
We cannot thank you enough.

Got questions about fostering?

  • Absolutely! We will match you with the right Greyhound for your home life and existing pet family.

  • Of course! Although we do ask you provide enough time to help the Greyhound along with learning pet life, as for most Greyhounds this could be their first time out of the kennel environment and into an actual home. They will need guidance to help settle them in, learn how to behave in a home and enable them to gain confidence in the wider world.

  • Each Greyhound is an individual and as such foster times can vary. How long they spend in their foster home also depends on how quickly a suitable adoptive family is found. You could expect to have your Greyhound in foster from anywhere between 4-6 weeks.

  • Sometimes our foster families fall in love with their foster Greyhound and you are more than welcome to adopt your foster. We call this a "foster fail". Keep in mind that the normal adoption process and fees would apply and unfortunately, you would be unable to adopt if that Greyhound has already been reserved.
